What is an Artist Missionary?

An Artist Missionary is someone who accepts the call to use their creativity and artistic giftings to minister to people, equip the Church, and share the Gospel.

United Adoration (UA) provides a team, a foundation, and freedom for Artist Missionaries to live out that call — and we would love for you to be one of them.*

UA is a home for you: a place where your faith, creativity, and mission converge, and you are known, supported, and sent.

Resident
International

Relocate cross-culturally to bring the Gospel and UA’s vision to a new land and people. Build a local team rooted in faith, creativity, and Scripture to carry on UA’s mission.

Global
Connector

Travel internationally to plant, train, and encourage UA communities across many cultures and contexts. Move seamlessly between churches, ministries, and nations as a catalyst for the global movement.

Community
Builder

Stay planted right where you are and mobilize people and churches in your region to flourish creatively. Serve as a UA ambassador, shepherding a local collective, and sending creatives on mission.

Artist-in-
Residence

Be placed within a church or ministry to create excellent, beautiful art that speaks directly to that community. Rally others to create for God’s glory while modeling a humble, devoted creative life.

Resident International

The Resident International Artist Missionary moves themselves cross-culturally to an unfamiliar land or people, bringing the Gospel and United Adoration (UA) DNA. They have a heart to see the Gospel have a lasting impact on individuals, communities, and nations. While the day-to-day work will be similar to a Community Builder (See Artist Missionary track #3), this role has the added challenges of navigating cross-cultural relationships, transplanting oneself and perhaps one’s family, and often language learning. 

Ministry focus may include things like:

  • Studying the local language and culture, contextualizing the arts and ministry to be more effective
  • Gathering locals for creative and devotional gatherings
  • Networking with churches, arts organizations, missions networks, and individuals
  • Casting a vision for fully-integrated lives of creativity and faith
  • Evangelizing via creative avenues
  • Ministering healing wherever God opens doors
  • Building a team of locals that will carry on the work
  • Equipping the team to send and receive artist missionaries
  • Collaborating with a global or regional team of resident internationals who do similar work

Global Connector

The uniquely gifted Global Connector is able to slide in and out of multiple cultures around the world. In addition to their cultural adeptness, they carry a fierce love for Jesus and a passion for scriptural engagement through the arts. Humility, adaptability, and open heartedness are important traits as they partner with many churches, ministries and denominations. Additional cross-cultural training may be required.

Ministry focus may include things like:

  • Traveling internationally multiple times per year
  • Encouraging the local leaders and other Artist Missionaries in their work, lives, and faith
  • Networking with ministry leaders around the globe at conferences, schools, churches, etc.
  • Pioneering new areas where UA hasn’t been established
  • Training new UA leaders
  • Equipping established UA communities to send and receive artist missionaries
  • Running UA events in many different contexts, contextualizing each one
  • Humbly serving the locals in whatever they ask for, be it teaching, preaching, etc.
  • Collaborating with other UA Global Connectors and National Team Leaders to coordinate global efforts and strategies

Community Builder

The Community Builder is a domestic missionary who discerns God has planted them right where He wants them to minister through the arts! They carry a heart for their community to flourish in authentic expressions of worship and faith. They have a love for the Body of Christ and build a team to serve the region. They see themselves as UA ambassadors, getting the word out to the community and learning the subcultures present in the area.

Ministry focus may include things like:

  • Studying the state of the arts and the churches in the region
  • Encouraging churches to have regular creative community events
  • Casting a vision to leaders, artists and pastors for fully-integrated lives of creativity and faith
  • Establishing a collective of artists and pastors to shepherd the creatives in the region
  • Organizing creative and artistic outreaches and evangelism to the community
  • Serving the needs of the community creatively
  • Receiving and sending artist missionaries to and from the community

Artist-in-Residence

The Artist-in-Residence is not only called to create for God’s glory, but called to be an example of doing it with excellence and great devotion. Their calling is to hone their craft and to create beautiful and compelling artwork that speaks to their community. They have a heart to lay all they create at the feet of Jesus, giving Him the glory and not taking it for themselves. They are placed in a “residence”, a church or ministry, which is discerned with and approved by their supervisor, and there is strategy in place for how their work can further the Kingdom of God. This work can often be partially funded by the ministry or church within whom the artist is “resident”.

Ministry focus may include things like:

  • Studying and discerning the community’s strengths, needs, and dreams
  • Creating impactful art that addresses what that community needs
  • Rallying the community to create for God’s glory and to go on mission
  • Participating in collectives of artists, not just Christian communities
  • Sharing their faith through their art
  • Partnering with community outreaches
  • Beautifying the communal areas in and around the community
  • Modeling a godly humble relationship between artists and ministry leaders
  • Collaborating with a cohort of Artists-in-Residence
